I love Hamburg very much. It feels like a second home to me. Over the years, I've had the chance to discover amazing dining spots in Hamburg: from local classics like Fischbrötchen alongside the iconic harbor views to fresh roasted coffee in the coolest coffee shop in Hamburg, and tasting Scandinavian flavors in a modern, stylish restaurant. Therefore, to help you plan your trip to Hamburg, I am sharing 14 iconic dining experiences here that will create a perfect gastronomic safari in Hamburg.
Note: Not all the dining experiences listed here are budget-friendly. However, I believe I have found the best way to save on some things and spend on what really matters to you. For me, that’s food and drink. Note: Below, you can download my free Google Maps guide for all the places in this dining guide.
1. Restaurant Teheran
Address: Adenauerallee 70, 20097 Hamburg
Teheran is one of the few restaurants in Hamburg offering traditional Persian cuisine. I love their kebabs. The dishes are delicious, well-presented, and the prices are great. When I dine here, it’s always a good sign that it’s filled with local Persian families.
Recommendation: Try Mirzaghasemi (€5.50) as a starter; baked eggplant with garlic, steamed tomatoes, and egg. Then continue with Fesenjan (€9.90), chicken in pomegranate sauce, roasted walnuts, and basmati rice. A food paradise.
2. Imbiss bei Schorsch
Address: Beim Grunen Jager 14, Hamburg
While Berlin is home to currywurst, I think Hamburg probably hosts the best currywurst in Germany, and that's thanks to the fantastic Imbiss bei Schorsch. From the outside, this small imbiss looks quite ordinary in the heart of St Pauli, but don’t let its appearance fool you. Step inside and order their currywurst (€3) served with a super secret spicy tomato sauce that is beloved among locals. Also, order the delicious potato salad (€2.50) and wash it all down with an ice-cold Astra beer.
3. Authentikka
Address: Lilienstraße 5, 20095 Hamburg, Germany

I love Authentikka; I currently consider it the best Indian restaurant in Germany. We discovered it first during the Covid period at the Winterhude branch and fell in love with its dishes. During our last two visits, we visited the new Hamburg Mitte branch, and I also love its minimalist, stylish interiors along with the food.
The menu is a mix of classics: butter chicken, dosas, dal makhani, and street foods like chaats and kebabs. I usually don’t order cocktails at Indian restaurants, but they are so good here. Sabrina ordered the Dirty Mango Lassi (€10.50); mango lassi with coconut rum and Bailey's. I tried the Chai Whisky Sour (€11.50) - very delicious. We ordered Aloo Tikki chaat (€9.50) as a starter - crispy potato patties topped with yogurt and chutney. Oh my God. 10/10. Then came the Hara Bhara Kebab (€9.50); you eat the spicy spinach, potato, and pea patties dipped in green chutney. Again, fantastic.
Main dishes. We ordered the classic Chicken Tikka Masala (€18.70) because it is a real tandoor oven and ate it with tandoori roti - very delicious. Then came the Kashmiri Aloo Dum (€16.50); baby potatoes stuffed with paneer, cashews, raisins, and coriander, cooked in this creamy sauce. Everything we tried was amazing. The prices are not cheap, but worth it for the quality. If you're on a budget, come here for lunch. The vegetarian lunch thali offer starts at €12.50 (11:30-14:00, €13.80 for the meat thali) an incredible value.

Also, I want to send a shout out to Mahadosa in the Reeperbahn area; they really do South Indian cuisine well, especially their amazing Dosas (starting from €12.50), which are South Indian savory crepes made from fermented chickpea and rice batter, served with spicy lentil soup (sambar) and tangy coconut chutney.
4. Franzbrötchen from Junge Bakerei or Der Kleine Konditorei
Another soft sweet treat you must try in Hamburg is Franzbrötchen. Literally called "French roll," this delicacy dates back to the period of the city's Napoleonic occupation from 1806 to 1814; Hamburg was introduced to the croissant. The modern Franzbrötchen, made with plenty of sugar and cinnamon, comes in several varieties: raisins, chocolate, or macadamia. One of the places I visited is Junge Bakerei, a bakery chain from Lübeck. Der Kleine Konditorei, a local favorite known for this, has branches on Langenfelder Damm, Lutterothstrasse, and Osterstrasse.
5. Shiso Burger
Address: Bugenhagenstrasse 23, 20095 Hamburg
Located on Bugenhagenstrasse, just behind the lively Mönckebergstrasse, Shiso Burger offers a different gourmet burger experience. Think of a classic gourmet burger shop but served in bao-style bread with high-quality Angus beef, lamb lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, with an Asian touch. The simple industrial design, muted colors, and small details like colorful origami cranes create a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere.
My favorite is the Bulgogi Burger: made with pieces of Angus tenderloin marinated in Korean chili paste instead of a ground beef patty. I also recommend the Chili-Lemon Burger: soft beef prepared with Asian spices, lemon mayonnaise, Korean chili paste, and teriyaki sauce topped with strong cheddar cheese. On the side, you can choose delicious sweet potato fries, edamame, or lotus chips. Tip: If the weather is nice, sit outside at one of the communal tables on the sidewalk.
Update: Shiso Burger has expanded since this guide was first written and now has multiple locations across Hamburg.
6. Brücke 10
Address: St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken 10, 20359 Hamburg

A trip to Hamburg is not complete without one of the fresh filled fish sandwiches known as Fischbrötchen. My favorite place to taste a Fischbrötchen in Hamburg is Brücke 10 bistro, located directly at the pier in the historic harbor of Hamburg at Landungsbrücken. Enjoy Nordseekrabben, small shrimp nestled in a crispy bread roll, or my favorite classic Matjes: a mildly sour fish topped with crispy onions, while watching the harbor ferries and catamarans pass by. Don't forget to sip this with an ice-cold local Astra beer. There are many Fischbrötchen vendors along the harbor, some cheaper than Brücke 10, but in terms of quality and location, this place is unmatched.
7. Kleine Haie Grosse Fische
Address: Querstrasse 4, 20359 Hamburg (St Pauli)
Brücke 10, the place I go for a harbor view; Kleine Haie Grosse Fische is where I go when I want a nice snack at the end of the night, especially if you don't want kebabs or McDonald's 🙂 A short walk from Reeperbahn, in the noisy Hans-Albers-Platz, this small hole-in-the-wall place offers some of the best Fischbrötchen in Hamburg. The interiors are made from reclaimed materials from St Pauli's Millerntor Stadium. Open almost all night, there is also live music. One of the most colorful places in the city.
8. La Casita (Tacos, Empanadas & more)
Address: Neuer Kamp 30, 20357 Hamburg, Germany
For the best tacos in Hamburg, look no further than La Casita. Owners Ernesto and Juan serve delicious tacos, empanadas (€4.50), and make great margaritas. Vegan tacos start at €15.50 (3 tacos) and Tacos Suadero, with beef, are €16. Prices are a bit high but the quality is truly great.
9. Erika’s Eck
Address: Sternstraße 98, 20357 Hamburg, Germany
Erika’s Eck, an institution in Hamburg for over 40 years, is popular in the heart of Schanzenviertel with the post-bar crowd (open until 21:00, from 17:00 to 14:00!). The giant schnitzel, beer, and hearty service are not too expensive for the crowd that comes here, but around €21 (a nice Bauernfrühstück, a traditional German breakfast cooked in a pan, with bacon, potatoes, and scrambled eggs for €15) gives you a taste of local history. Celebrities, locals, night owls, and early risers have all passed through the same door. Cash is recommended and sharing with strangers is completely normal.
10. Oma’s Apotheke
Address: Schanzenstraße 87, 20357 Hamburg, Germany
If you have a tighter budget, I recommend Oma’s Apotheke, another Hamburg institution in Schanzenviertel. It has a rustic, nostalgic charm, the beer is good and reasonably priced, and they also make a nice schnitzel. The star of the menu is the affordable student breakfast that includes unlimited coffee. (Not particularly amazing but it gets the job done)
11. Zuckermonarchie
Address: Taubenstrasse 15, 20359 Hamburg
Welcome to your most innocent sin in Hamburg's Reeperbahn district. Just off Taubenstrasse, Hamburg's cupcake queen: Zuckermonarchie. You can choose from beautiful pastel-colored cupcakes to champagne-flavored macarons and cake pops worthy of a Disney fantasy in their pink candy box interior. Along with beautifully prepared coffee and a variety of flavored teas, the café also offers delicious homemade lemonades. Everything is made from scratch, with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, and organic eggs are used. If you are in Hamburg on the weekend, come with an empty stomach and order the special breakfast Katherina die Grosse (€12.95 per person): a mix of sweet and savory treats. You won't be disappointed.
12. Nord Coast Coffee Roastery
Address: Deichstrasse 9, 20459 Hamburg
Germany loves coffee so much that it is said to consume more than its total consumption of beer and water. This love is even more pronounced in Hamburg, thanks to its access to the world's main shipping and trade routes. Coffee was one of the reasons for the warehouses that make up the Speicherstadt area, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the late 19th century.
Therefore, in the heart of Speicherstadt, you can taste some of the best coffees in the city at Nord Coast Coffee Roastery. In addition to coffee, customers flock here to buy pre-packaged coffee beans, and they have a proud reputation for serving some of the best homemade creamy waffles in the city and possibly Germany (€4.70). Other popular favorites include fresh-squeezed juices, homemade granola (€5.90), pancakes with banana bread (gluten-free, €7.50), and toast with avocado, poached egg, homemade green pesto, and baby spinach (€7.50).
13. Haebel
Address: Paul-Roosen-Strasse 31, 22767 Hamburg
A meal experience that is far from ostentation but truly magnificent, in a cozy atmosphere in the heart of St Pauli. Haebel has come a long way since this guide was first written. Chef Fabio Haebel's restaurant is now a Michelin-starred restaurant and has been awarded the Green Star for extraordinary sustainable practices, making it one of Hamburg's most celebrated and least ostentatious fine dining venues. With only 16 seats, an open kitchen where every meal is prepared, and two regularly changing menus that reflect seasonal and local ingredients: Fauna (omnivore) and Flora (vegetarian). The venue offers a simple yet stylish interior design, large windows overlooking the street, and an atmosphere surrounded by the vibrant street life and graffiti of St Pauli. An extraordinary experience for a pricey but special occasion. Don't forget to make a reservation in advance through their website.
14. Cafe Paris
Address: Rathausstrasse 4, 20095 Hamburg

Definitely not budget-friendly, but for me, this cafe is a must-visit part of the Hamburg experience: a true piece of Paris in the heart of the city. Just a step away from the Alster and Hamburg's magnificent town hall, the classic Cafe Paris reflects the charm and elegance of Parisian cafes from the early 20th century. I think it's the perfect place to start any day in Hamburg. In the morning hours, when the cafe is not too busy, you can enjoy sipping your coffee while taking in the beautiful Art Nouveau interiors. Sit in front of the bar, have your coffee with a crispy buttery croissant, and if your budget allows and you like oysters like I do, order a half dozen delicious oysters and sip them with a glass of cremant. Later in the day, enjoy classic French dishes like Bouillabaisse, Steak Frites, or Poulet Citron.
